Located 250km north–west of Melbourne on a system of lakes, the scenic township of Boort is known as the 'Northern Oasis' because of its water riches and abundant birdlife. The name Boort is taken from the aboriginal words for 'smoke on the hill'. Boort has a population of approximately 800 people and services an area in excess of 2,300.

Agriculture forms the basis of the local economy, mainly consisting of dry land and irrigation cropping, tomatoes, sheep & cattle. The district also boasts a combination of new developments including the largest irrigated olive grove in the southern hemisphere, wineries, aquaculture, many of which are happy to welcome tourists.

Little Lake Boort provides a wide range of leisure activities including water-skiing, fishing, sailing and bird-watching, whilst the 'Heritage Lake Walk' is both informative and educational.
The region offers an attractive, alternate route from Echuca, Swan Hill and Mildura to Melbourne.
